GET FAMILIAR: JAHMIL XT QUBEKA

There hasn't been a film in African cinema that has created as much controversy or anticipation as Of Good Report, and filmmaker Jahmil XT Qubeka wouldn't have it any other way.

Born in Eastern Cape, Jahmil XT Qubeka always knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. After a few years working in what he described as "useless work", Qubeka decided to actively pursue his career in film and worked as an apprentice for photographer/filmmaker Daron Chatz. During his apprenticeship, Qubeka began working on his first documentary, Reporting Live From the Concrete Jungle, a film he states began his journey in film making.

In his latest film, Jahmil tries his hand at a film noir with a dark and disturbing twist. Of Good Report, described by Qubeka, "is a serial killer origins story about how a social misfit turns into an inadequate man hell bent on satisfying his shameful lust" and begins a troubling, obsessive relationship with one of his students.

Of Good Report co-stars Mothusi Magano & Petronella Tshuma
Despite the controversy surrounding the film, was originally scheduled to open this year's Durban International Film Festival but was banned from being screened, Jahmil stands by his film and feels for the first time in his career he has made a feature that is all his own.

It seems that Jahmil XT Qubeka is destined to set the film world ablaze and I, for one can't wait to see what happens next.
