GET FAMILIAR: THE AFRICA CHANNEL

As a kid, it was rare for me to find any programs growing up that showed what life was like for people in Africa. The few programs I did see depicted the African experience as a tumultuous, dangerous, and poverty stricken existence, which begged the question, is this how people see Africa? Africa was in need of a serious image overhaul, but who would take on the responsibility of providing a more positive side to land that is often misrepresented? Enter, the Africa Channel.

Debuting on September 1, 2005, the Africa Channel showcases the very best Africa has to offer in film, television, and music. With the goal to "open up a daily window into modern African life, and in the process, help demystify Africa for American viewers", the independently owned network makes a conscious effort to place a positive spotlight on life in Africa. Whether it's their gripping drama,"Jacob's Cross", the travel series, "First Time Africa", or an insightful exposé on "Africa Journal", the Africa Channel has made it their mission to share with viewers a side of Africa that's rarely shown, and all I can say is mission accomplished!

Check out a clip from the Africa Channel's hit show"Jacob's Cross",  which is currently in its seventh season!
