I am thoroughly enjoying the fact that Africans are slowly making their way into mainstream American entertainment. Idris Elba is taking over the big screen, Duro Olowu is conquering the fashion world, and musicians like Nneka, Wale, and Tinie Tempah are taking over the charts. Clearly, Kanye West and Jay Z are aware of this, because they both have introduced and shared African artists and music to the masses. Kanye West was instrumental in D'Banj making it big in America, while Jay Z produced Fela, and used a beat from soon to be well known producer, Wondagurl, on his latest album.
Wondagurl, a.k.a. Ebony Oshunrinde, is a Canadian-Nigerian producer whom has worked with Jay, Ryan Leslie, and Travis Scott. She's won countless beat making contests in Canada, and has Boi-1da (Drake's producer) as a mentor. Did I mention that she is only sixteen?! At age 9, she was inspired to start making music after watching a video of Jay Z and Timbaland in the studio, and now years later her beat is featured on his song "Crown".
She is officially my latest obsession and I am so excited to see what is next for her. Check out this video of her talking about being on Jay Z's album.
