AYA is a graphic novel series created by Marguerite Abouet, an Ivory Coast native. The comic takes place in the Ivory Coast in 1978 and centers around 19 year-old, Aya, and her interactions with people. The subject material varies in tone, from chasing boys, to making life altering decisions, but the book always maintains a positive outlook on life.
AYA shows a side of Africa that is rarely shown by the media; an Africa without war, poverty or famine; its refreshing take on Africa is one of the reasons why it has been such a success, and 200,000 copies have been sold in France. The book's popularity has led to the first-ever animated feature film, which is slated for release May 2013.
