With only a few credits to her name, actress Lupita Nyong'o is already creating a name for herself in the film world. And with a role in Steve McQueen's highly anticipated "12 Years A Slave", which Nyong'o is expected to take home the New Hollywood Award at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards, it seems as though this is just the beginning for the Kenyan actress. Bottom line: It's about time we all get familiar with Lupita Nyong'o.
Born in Mexico, Lupita spent most of her time primarily in Kenya with her family and politician father Anyang Nyong'o, former Kenyan Minister for Medical Services. Before landing a starring role in the Kenyan television series Shuga, Nyong'o worked as a production crew member for several Hollywood films, including Fernando Meirelle's The Constant Gardner and Mira Nair's The Namesake.

Once production on Shuga wrapped, Lupita returned to the States where she enrolled in the Yale School of Drama acting program and starred in many stage productions including: Gertrude Stein's Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights, Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, and Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Immediately following her graduation from Yale, Lupita landed the role of Patsey, a slave who receives unwanted attention from her master and his wife in "12 Years A Slave".
Having competed against 1,000 actresses for this role, Lupita says she will forever be grateful to director Steve McQueen, stating "He chooses actors whom he trusts...he chooses actors because of the work he is confident you can bring, not because of a name. And because of that, I got this role."
Be sure to check out Lupita Nyong'o and all the talented actors in this year's "12 Years A Slave".
