I always thought samurai were one of the coolest warriors on the planet; the mythos around them, their code of honor, the beautiful armor sets, but I thought that all samurai were Japanese until today: enter Yasuke.
Yasuke was an African slave from Mozambique that was made a page to Japanese military leader Oda Nobunaga; who is responsible for laying the groundwork for the unification of Japan. Oda took a huge liking to Yasuke and made him a samurai. During the Honnoji incident, where Nobunaga was attacked by an invading army, Yasuke took Nobunaga's son to safety and, when confronted with opposition, fought valiantly alongside the son until they were outnumbered.
Yasuke ended up being sent to a church with Jesuits and the rest of his life is an unknown story but how cool is that? He went from being a slave to being a samurai of one of the most powerful men in all of Japan. I know his history is brief but for those few moments he was more than property, he was a warrior said to have the strength of ten men. There is show called Afro Samurai which has a black samurai as the main character, maybe it was based off of Yasuke? I wonder if he did have an afro...that would just add to his epicness.
