African Metropolis, the brain child of Steven Markovitz and the Goethe Institute South Africa, is a new film project where seven African directors are chosen to make a short film about the city they're from. Directors Jim Chuchu (Nairobi), Vincent Moloi (Johannesburg), Patrick Kalala Tujibikila (Kinshasa), Folasakin Iwajomo (Lagos), Ahmed El Ghoneimy (Cairo), Philipe Lacote (Abidjan), and Marie Ka (Dakar) were selected to showcase their unique, bold, and refreshing approaches to film making.
There are so many great stories that will be told: Jim Chuchu's A Sun Came; an end of the world dramedy about making amends; Patrick Kalala Tujibikila's Doubtful Client, an unassuming taxi driver is sent on a wild goose chase when he is unexpectedly taken hostage by his passenger; and Marie Ka's The Other Woman, a film about a 50 year-old housewife's road to self discovery after allowing her husband's second wife to move in with them.
African Metropolis definitely has the potential to change the way people view African storytelling.
